Choosing a primary care physician: a short guide

What to consider when picking a primary care physician, and what to do at the first visit to set the relationship up well.

A primary care physician is the clinician who knows you over time. They handle routine care, coordinate with specialists, and are usually the first person you contact when something new comes up. Picking one is a small decision that pays off for years.

Internal medicine vs. family medicine

Both are primary care, with slightly different training. Internists see adults only. Family physicians see patients of all ages, which can be useful if you want one clinic for the whole household. Pediatricians see patients from birth through adolescence.

What to consider

  • Location. A clinic within fifteen minutes of home or work is more useful than one across town.
  • Hours. Evening and weekend slots matter if you work during the day.
  • Languages. A physician who speaks your language fluently makes a real difference.
  • Access to the network. If you see specialists for chronic conditions, a primary care physician inside the same network can see their notes.
  • Patient portal. The portal is where you will book, see results, and message the team. A usable one is more important than it sounds.

The first visit

Bring your medication list, a short summary of your medical history, and copies of recent test results if you have them. Use the visit to:

  1. Update your history with the physician.
  2. Discuss the checks that are due at your age.
  3. Agree on how to message the team between visits.
  4. Set a date for the next visit, if one is needed.

If the fit is not right

It is fine to change primary care physicians. The relationship works best when you trust the physician’s communication style. If you felt rushed, were not heard, or simply did not click, switch. Your patient portal history moves with you inside the same network.

This article is general information. If you are not sure which physician to start with, the clinic’s front desk can match you based on your needs.
